Working Group 7:

Language work, language professionals

Language work is a broad field and language professionals have diverse titles and profiles involving translation, interpreting, terminology, copywriting, and various other types of communication and content production. Technology already forms a significant part of the everyday work and professionals increasingly interact with and through technology, from machine translation to remote interpreting solutions to communication and collaboration platforms. Technology is also shaping the work of language professionals, with both positive impact as a tool but also potentially adverse effects on working conditions. As new technologies emerge, increasing human-machine interaction is also shaping and changing language professions. Profiles for future language professionals may exist in the intersections of old professions – and new skill sets and tasks not yet envisioned. WG7 will explore the effects of emerging technologies on language work and professionals. What is the role of technology and humans? How will increasing use of speech and touch, as well as augmented and virtual reality affect the professionals’ interaction with their tools? Are these technologies truly for all, supporting wider accessiblity, or will they create new barriers? How will theory, practice and ethics be impacted? How will training of language professionals adapt in the future?
