How can we efficiently teach and learn in the human-machine era? What impact does technology have on various aspects of language teaching and learning? We use the TPACK model and promote the integration of language, pedagogy, and technology.
LITHME Working Group 5 includes a wide range of expert researchers and practitioners working together on the pedagogical, technological and content issues associated with the integration of emerging technologies in language teaching and learning (see Sayers et al., 2021, for a presentation of such technologies). We are an open networking group which warmly welcomes new members!
The core question of our group is: How can we efficiently teach and learn in this human-machine interaction era?
We use the TPACK model (Mishra & Koehler, 2006) as a source of inspiration to help us ensure a smooth integration of technology in language learning and teaching, as we want to avoid adopting a technocentric approach. The model is a complex interplay of three primary forms of knowledge: Content (CK), Pedagogy (PK), and Technology (TK). We follow this approach by stressing the much-needed integration between these three knowledge bases.
We aim to promote the use of technology that has real pedagogical added-value. We are also analyzing the impact of technology on other areas related to language learning and teaching, (cognition, pedagogical materials, language norms, etc.).
We currently have four research sub-groups within our Working Group 5:
At the moment, each sub-group is working on a review study. We meet online on a regular basis to discuss the set research topic and prepare articles for publication. The research sub-groups consist of approximately ten members from different European countries, highly committed to research work and to dissemination of our results. In addition, we are happy not only to share our specific expertise among the group members (we are learning from each other) but also to present our research both locally and internationally.
