STSM call for applications – a quick call open

COST Action Language In The Human Machine Era is accepting applications for Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs).

NOTE THE DEADLINE: 11 OCTOBER 2021, 16:00 Central European Time. One application per person.
STSM only until 30 OCTOBER 2021!

Eligibility and basic criteria: see section 8 of the COST Vademecum. For definitions of certain terms in the Vademecum, e.g. “European RTD Organisations”, “International Organisations”, see section 3 of this guidance document. Also note: there is no pre-defined list of ‘Approved international organisations’ as STSM hosts. Each one is considered separately. Please contact the STSM Coordinator (details below) to discuss potential international hosts. Applications that do not meet all eligibity criteria will not be considered.

An STSM is an individual research visit across an international border, lasting a minimum of five days, and enabling the participant to gain and share knowledge. We are looking for people who know about language but not so much about technology, and vice versa, and who want to gain and share knowledge across those academic boundaries.

The STSM is a networking tool offered by COST, aimed at supporting individual mobility, strengthening existing networks and fostering collaboration between COST Action Participants. Each STSM should specifically contribute to the aims and objectives of LITHME (see our home page, and our more detailed Memorandum of Understanding), whilst also enabling participants to learn new techniques, and to gain access to specific data, instruments and/or methods not available in their own institutions. Participants do not need to cover all the topics of LITHME, but they should fit the profile of at least one Working Group (described in the Memorandum of Understanding), and ideally demonstrate learning across the interests of different Working Groups (especially between linguists and technology).

Financial support is limited to cover travel, accommodation and meal expenses and is paid in the form of a Grant after the submission of a STSM report (50% pre-grant is possible for Inclusiveness Target Countries).

Further LITHME-specific criteria

Please read more about LITHME-specific criteria on our website: https://lithme.eu/short-term-scientific-missions/

You can propose any duration for your STSM (longer than the minimum 5 days), though please note that the mission must end by 30 October 2021. Further STSMs will be announced in subsequent Grant Periods.

In order to apply, the applicant should create an account in e-COST (https://e-services.cost.eu) or log into e-COST and click on the STSM application tab, fill the application and upload the following supporting documents: (1) Letter of support from the Home Institution and (2) Written agreement from the Host Institution that the STSM applicant can perform the activities in the STSM work plan on the agreed dates
